About The Author

Putting my heart & soul on paper,
this is my writing.

Russel Brooks grew up in the 1960s as part of a Navy family, moving across the country before settling in Virginia Beach. Athletic and adventurous, Brooks excelled in gymnastics and wrestling during his youth and now channels his competitive spirit into sailboat racing.

Professionally, he works as an asset manager, but his true passion lies in storytelling. Brooks was inspired to write The Squirrels Finnegan as a tribute to a lifelong friend and her family, drawing on their experiences to create a touching and empowering tale for children and parents alike.

Author’s Message

“My fondest wish is that parents will sit down with their children and read this book together, in the hopes that together they can talk openly and honestly about the issues covered in this book.”
— J. Russell Brooks

Why I Wrote This Book:
The Finnegan family has been a long-time inspiration to me because I am not only the author but also the true character “Uncle Russ.” I hope this story will give families a better understanding of what it’s like to have a child with special needs.

Yes, there are difficult challenges and decisions involved, but the innocent, unconditional love of a special-needs child makes the journey worthwhile. Through this book, I aim to help parents teach their children about embracing differences, asking questions, and combating bullying.

Together, we can raise a more compassionate generation.
